GEF7 - Implementing Sustainable Low & Non-Chemical Development in SIDS (ISLANDS)
Summary
This project aims to support the Maldives in transitioning toward sustainable, low- and non-chemical development pathways in line with the global ISLANDS (Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States) Programme. By focusing on sustainable practices that reduce chemical dependency, the project seeks to protect human health, biodiversity, and ecosystems.
Key interventions include:
- Strengthening national systems and infrastructure for the management of chemicals and waste in alignment with the Stockholm, Basel, and Minamata Conventions.
- Promoting the phasing out of hazardous substances, including chemicals in products (CiP), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs).
- Developing policies and regulatory frameworks that foster sustainable, non-chemical alternatives.
- Mainstreaming environmentally sound practices across sectors including tourism, agriculture, waste, and manufacturing.
- Facilitating regional collaboration, data-sharing, and innovation among SIDS.
The project contributes to the long-term resilience of island communities by building institutional capacities, promoting green innovation, and creating safer environments for current and future generations.
