Statement on the Passing of Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, Chief Fisheries Officer of Barbados

The UNDP Barbados and Eastern Caribbean team extends deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and the wider fisheries community on the sudden passing of Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox, Barbados’ Chief Fisheries Officer.

Dr. Cox was an exceptional leader and a valued partner to UNDP, whose contributions significantly enhanced the fisheries sector in Barbados. Through her engagement in initiatives such as the Barbados Coastal Fisheries Resilience Project and collaborations with the UNDP Accelerator Lab, she brought deep technical expertise, strategic insight, and an extensive network that strengthened dialogue, innovation, and action in the blue economy.

Dr. Cox championed an ambitious vision for the future of fisheries in Barbados – one rooted in sustainability, resilience, and partnerships. Her remarkable energy, unwavering commitment and people-centred approach inspired colleagues and stakeholders alike, leaving a lasting impact on the Fisheries Division and the communities it serves. UNDP is grateful for her partnership and dedication. Her legacy will continue to guide efforts toward a more sustainable and resilient coastal and marine future.
