Ulaanbaatar, 14 March 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is allocating $50,000 to assist Mongolia in mitigating the effects of dzud, a severe winter condition, and to support the impacted herders.

The aid will be directly provided to herders in the affected provinces including Dornod, Sukhbaatar, and some soums – sub-provincial administrative unit - of Khovd. The delivery of the aid to the affected herder household was done today in Uyench soum, Khovd province together with Ms. Matilda Dimovska, UNDP Resident Representative in Mongolia, and Ms. Bolormaa Enkhbat, Governor of Khovd province.

Furthermore, the UNDP will conduct a socio-economic impact assessment to understand the dzud's impact on herders, guiding the development of preparedness strategies and policy interventions in Mongolia to prevent future crises.

The 2024 dzud has escalated to a critical level, posing significant threats across Mongolia. With more than 90% of the territory at risk, approximately 190,000 herding households face challenges such as insufficient feed, loss of livestock, and security of their livelihood.

Ms. Matilda Dimovska, the UNDP Resident Representative in Mongolia emphasized solidarity and commitment in these challenging times and stated, "Mongolia's herders are known for their resilience, but they can't face this extreme dzud crisis alone. As a trusted partner for the Government and people of Mongolia, we stand united with Mongolia during these trying times. This effort underscores UNDP's commitment to assisting countries in crisis settings around the world to improve the resilience and sustainable practices to amplify national efforts towards climate change mitigation and disaster risk reduction which are crucial for building long-term resilience against future climate-induced shocks.”

This support further complements UNDP's ongoing broader initiative to strengthen the resilience of Mongolian herders vulnerable to climate change, enhance their adaptability, and seek an integrated approach to address climate change impacts on herder livelihoods and on the natural resources on which they rely.
