Gender Equality

Gender equality, inclusion, and the empowerment of all people are essential foundations for sustainable and equitable development. At UNDP Angola, we believe that creating space for full participation—especially for women, girls, and key populations—is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

In Angola, UNDP works closely with the Government, civil society, the private sector, and United Nations agencies to integrate gender equality across all areas of work—from governance to energy, from environment to innovation—ensuring that no one is left behind.

In 2023, UNDP Angola achieved BRONZE level certification under the Gender Equality Seal, reinforcing the Office’s commitment to making equality a daily practice, both within and beyond the institution.

What Guides Our Work

Equality, inclusion, and empowerment are at the heart of UNDP’s work in Angola.
We believe that sustainable development is only possible when all people, women, men, youth, and key and vulnerable populations, participate fully and benefit from the progress achieved.

These principles guide all our areas of work, serving as a cross-cutting theme that strengthens the impact of our actions in the economic, social, environmental, and governance sectors.

Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Diversification

  • We promote the economic empowerment of women and young people by supporting skills development, entrepreneurship, and the transition from the informal to the formal sector.
  • We work with public, private, and community institutions to expand access to financing, digitalization, and fair markets, especially for women-led MSMEs.
  • We support policies and investments that strengthen green and innovative jobs, paving the way for a more resilient, diversified, and equitable economy.

Health and well-Being with Equity

  • With support from the government and partners, UNDP strengthens more accessible, integrated, and inclusive health services, prioritizing key and vulnerable populations—including people affected by stigma, discrimination, or barriers to access.

  • We support efforts to combat inequalities in access to sexual and reproductive health, HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, and promote more efficient and transparent digital management systems that improve care delivery.

  • The leadership of communities and civil society organizations is central to guaranteeing the right to health without discrimination, ensuring that all people are visible, heard, and respected.

Environment, Climate, and Resilience

  • Climate change affects women and men differently. That is why UNDP integrates equality and inclusion into all adaptation, mitigation, and environmental protection efforts.

  • We support policies, investments, and projects that promote resilient livelihoods, clean energy, and sustainable management of natural resources, with the active participation of women, youth, and local communities.

  • We believe that inclusive leadership is essential to strengthening climate resilience and protecting our shared future.

Democratic Governance and Human Rights

  • Effective and inclusive governance is the foundation of more just societies.

  • UNDP supports public institutions in developing gender-sensitive policies and services that expand access to justice, transparency, and civic participation.

  • We promote women’s and youth leadership by strengthening representation in decision-making spaces and combating discriminatory norms and practices.

Through partnerships with the government, civil society, and the private sector, we work to ensure that no one is left behind.

Institutional Culture and Commitment
  • UNDP Angola promotes an organizational culture based on inclusion, equity, and respect for diversity.

  • We believe that a representative and balanced work environment is essential to putting into practice the values we uphold for the country’s development.

  • We foster participatory and accountable leadership, equal opportunities, work-life balance, and zero tolerance for discrimination and harassment.

  • The Office invests in ongoing training on equality and inclusion, integrating these principles into team management, recruitment processes, and strategic decisions.

  • In 2023, UNDP Angola obtained Bronze-level certification from the Gender Equality Seal, a milestone that reaffirms our commitment to representation, equity, and an institutional culture that values all people.
