About Us

Our mission and mandate

UNDP is the United Nations' leading agency dedicated to international development. Present in around 170 countries and territories, our work aims to eradicate poverty, reduce inequalities, and strengthen countries' resilience, helping them to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In Angola, UNDP acts as a strategic partner to the government, civil society, the private sector, and international partners, supporting the development of public policies, institutional capacities, and integrated solutions for inclusive and sustainable growth.

Our areas of action in Angola

The UNDP program in Angola focuses on four priority areas:

  • Employment and inclusive economic growth
  • Health and well-being
  • Climate action and environmental resilience
  • Democratic and effective governance

These priorities are reinforced by cross-cutting themes such as gender equality, innovation, and digital transformation.

Vision

We strive for a country where all people can exercise their rights, live with dignity, and contribute to a more just, resilient, and sustainable future.

History

UNDP was created in 1965 by the United Nations General Assembly, as a result of the merger between the Expanded Technical Assistance Program (1949) and the United Nations Special Fund (1958). The UNDP has been present in Angola since independence, supporting the country in its post-conflict reconstruction, economic and institutional stabilisation, and sustainable development phases.

Alignment with the United Nations Charter

Our work is guided by the principles of the United Nations Charter, promoting peace, human rights, equality, and international cooperation to address economic, social, and environmental challenges.
