Climate Action and and Environmental Sustainability
UNDP maintains an ongoing dialogue with the Government of Angola to promote the effective integration of environmental priorities into development planning and financing. Guided by its Climate Promise, UNDP supports the country in enhancing its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, while accelerating the implementation of conditional adaptation and mitigation measures.
This support extends to the National Climate Change Strategy 2022–2035, the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2019–2025, commitments on land degradation neutrality, and the National Adaptation Plans. UNDP also facilitates Angola’s access to key climate financing mechanisms, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF), and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), along with other funding opportunities from bilateral and development partners.
UNDP works to scale up low-emission development solutions and transform livelihoods for off-grid communities, while addressing deforestation and forest degradation through ecosystem restoration and carbon market promotion. In partnership with the Government, other UN agencies and the private sector, we promote a just energy transition by expanding access to renewable energy solutions.
The programme also supports the effective management of biodiversity and wildlife resources, aligned with UNDP’s Nature Pledge and the Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at COP 15. This includes improving the management of conservation areas and marine protected zones, with active participation from youth, women, and rural communities, supported through digital and community-based platforms.
In the areas of climate adaptation and resilient agriculture, UNDP collaborates with key partners such as IFAD, FAO, and UN-Habitat, helping Angola implement sustainable responses to its most pressing environmental and climate challenges.
