Technical mission highlights Huambo’s potential to lead agricultural innovation in Angola

May 25, 2026

The province of Huambo hosted a technical mission as part of the upcoming implementation of the timbuktoo AgriTech Hub Angola, an initiative aimed at positioning Angola as a regional leader in agricultural innovation, entrepreneurship, and the digital transformation of the agri-food sector.

Held from May 18 to 24, the mission brought together representatives from government institutions, including the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESCTI), acting as the coordinating entity; the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MINAGRIF), as co-coordinator; the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MINDCOM), the Office of Economic Coordination, as well as universities, research centers, financial institutions, entrepreneurship support organizations, and private sector actors.

The mission provided an opportunity to deepen dialogue with key institutions in Huambo’s agricultural, scientific, and entrepreneurial ecosystem through meetings and technical visits to universities, research centers, laboratories, vocational training institutions, youth organizations, associations of women entrepreneurs, cooperatives, and financial institutions.

Throughout the various working sessions, a common vision emerged among the participants: the need to position agriculture as a sector increasingly linked to innovation, technology, scientific research, and entrepreneurship. One capable of creating opportunities for young people and driving the country’s economic diversification.

Exchanges with José Eduardo dos Santos University (UJES), research centers, and stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem also reinforced the recognition of Huambo as an academic and scientific hub, with favorable conditions for hosting initiatives focused on sustainable agriculture, emerging technologies, and the development of innovative solutions for the agri-food sector.

The meetings also provided an opportunity to explore opportunities related to artificial intelligence applied to agriculture, mechanization, soil science, climate observation, food processing, and the development of agricultural startups—areas considered strategic for increasing competitiveness, attracting investment, and promoting skilled employment.

Among the key factors highlighted were the province's strong agricultural focus, the concentration of academic and technical institutions, the significant presence of young people, and the growing entrepreneurial dynamism linked to the agri-food sector.

The mission also identified opportunities to strengthen the link between scientific research, entrepreneurship, and the market, promoting greater collaboration among universities, startups, cooperatives, SMEs, and financial institutions. In this context, the future Timbuktoo AgriTech Hub is beginning to be seen as a strategic coordination platform, capable of connecting stakeholders, strengthening partnerships, and supporting the development of a more integrated and innovative agricultural ecosystem.

As part of the pan-African timbuktoo platform, the future hub is expected to contribute to strengthening the national AgriTech ecosystem, developing startups and SMEs, enhancing digital and entrepreneurial skills among young people, as well as promoting market linkages along strategic economic corridors, including the Lobito Corridor and opportunities within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
