Integrated Biological and Behavioral Survey (IBBS) on HIV, Syphilis and Hepatitis B among Female Sex Workers, Men who have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Angola
July 10, 2026
The Integrated Biological and Behavioural Survey (IBBS) on HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis among key populations was conducted between November 2024 and January 2025 to generate evidence that will strengthen Angola's national HIV response. The survey was undertaken in response to the limited availability of up-to-date data on these populations, whose most recent studies were conducted more than eight years ago.
The IBBS focused on female sex workers (FSWs), men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender women (TG) in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Bié and Cuanza Sul. Following a formative assessment, Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS) was used for FSWs and MSM, while an exploratory study among transgender women in the latter three provinces employed the snowball sampling method.
The survey combined a behavioural component, based on a standardized questionnaire, with a biological component that included rapid testing for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis, laboratory confirmation of all positive results using ARCHITECT technology, RPR testing for syphilis, and viral load testing.
