Message from Denise António, UNDP Resident Representative in Angola
Africa Day 2026: Water and Sanitation to Accelerate Development
May 25, 2026
Each year, on the 25th of May, we come together to honor Africa; its people, its strength, and the momentum of a continent shaping its own future.
This year, that celebration comes with an urgent reminder: one of the most fundamental foundations of our existence, water.
Access to clean water and safe sanitation is not just a basic need.
It defines the very course of our health, our food security, our dignity, and our economic opportunity.
As a woman and a mother, I recognize this reality all too well.
Because when water is out of reach, it affects entire families, especially women and children, who bear the heaviest burden, often walking long distances to collect water, missing school, and facing limited opportunities.
Without it, there is no true prosperity.
In Angola, we see both the challenge and the transformation every day.
From young innovators reshaping agriculture, to solar-powered irrigation reaching farmers in remote communities, to the markets where so many earn their livelihoods, water is the common thread that connects it all.
UNDP remains committed to working alongside Angola to strengthen the connections between water and energy, food security and resilience, investment and people.
So, Africa Day is not only a moment to celebrate but a reminder that together, we can build an Africa where everyone has access to the foundations they need to thrive.
An Africa that leaves no one behind.
Happy Africa Day.
In Huíla and other regions, solar-powered solutions are expanding access to water and supporting rural communities through sustainable irrigation.
