UNDP in Suriname

Democratic governance

In its work on democratic governance, UNDP emphasizes strengthening government institutions while also engaging with non-State partners. UNDP supports the Parliament, the Ministry of Justice and Police, and the Ministry of Home Affairs to enhance legislative capacity, with a focus on human rights protection, the participation of women in decision-making, and the design of a comprehensive system that provides insight into migration and human mobility. UNDP continues to support the Government in ensuring free and fair electoral processes, a role it has fulfilled for over 20 years, as it remains the only United Nations agency offering this support.

If the technical and financial support provided by UNDP is efficiently and effectively directed toward achieving sustainable solutions in the areas of parliamentary support, human rights protection, migration, and gender equity, then Suriname moves closer to attaining a more just and fair society, with significant improvements in the enjoyment of human rights by all.
