ABOUT US

Who We Are

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network. It advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build better lives. UNDP operates in 170 countries and territories, working closely with governments to develop local solutions to global and national development challenges. UNDP in Suriname is guided by the Country Programme Document, which is in line with the priorities of the Government.

Mission and Vision

UNDP’s central mandate is to help developing countries build their own national capacity to achieve sustainable human development. As countries strengthen their local capabilities, they become more effective in leveraging UNDP’s expertise and its wide range of partners. UNDP also supports countries in attracting and using development aid effectively. Across all its activities, UNDP promotes the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women.

The UN Charter

UNDP’s work is grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter, which emphasizes peace, security, development, and human rights. Through its global network and partnerships, UNDP contributes to the broader UN mission by supporting inclusive and sustainable development, reducing inequalities, and fostering resilience in communities worldwide.

History

At the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, world leaders placed development at the center of the global agenda by adopting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These goals set clear targets for reducing poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women by 2015. UNDP played a key role in helping countries access the knowledge and resources needed to achieve the MDGs, while also supporting the UN system and its partners in raising awareness and tracking progress.

UNDP has been operating in Suriname since 1994, supporting the Surinamese Government and its people in achieving national development goals. The work of UNDP in Suriname focuses on four main areas: Democratic Governance, Social Development, Environment, and Climate Change and Natural Resource Management.
