Project Summary:

Building on the achievements of the GCCA+ project (phases one and two), the Protection, Restoration, and Sustainable Use of Mangrove Forests (PRSUMF) project aims to strengthen the resilience of coastal communities in Suriname through inclusive, gender-responsive coastal zone management, mangrove conservation, and sustainable use.

Enhancing the meaningful participation of local communities, particularly in the co-management of mangroves and Multiple Use Management Areas (MUMAs). Increasing sustainable income generation, with a focus on women and youth, through mangrove-based value chains such as honey production, fisheries, and nature tourism.

Through this integrated approach, the project aims to mitigate the impacts of rising sea levels and frequent flooding, while supporting the 90% of Suriname’s population living in low-lying coastal areas to adapt to climate change. It promotes sustainable mangrove protection and use, alongside the adoption of resilient, nature-based economic activities.

Objective:

Protection, restoration, and sustainable use of Suriname’s mangrove forests to enhance resilience to climate change, support sustainable livelihoods, and promote inclusive, gender-responsive coastal zone management.

Expected results:

Enhanced coordination, enforcement, and policy development capacity of government in coastal zone management.

Strengthened awareness of the value of mangrove ecosystems for climate resilience.

Increased capacity of local communities for effective and transparent management of mangroves and MUMAs.

Inclusive value chain strategies for honey, fisheries, and eco-tourism developed.

Guidelines for sustainable extraction and use of natural resources in coastal areas.

Increased skills and knowledge of local populations, especially women and youth, on sustainable value chain development, value adding, cost-benefit analysis, and organizational development.
