Validation Workshop for the National Strategy for Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining 2026–2036
June 2, 2026
An important output of the Improving Environmental Management in the Mining Sector of Suriname, with Emphasis on Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (EMSAGS) Project is the development of a national strategy for a sustainable artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector. In this context, the project is supporting the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) in the formulation of this strategy. To carry out this assignment, NDE Training & Consultancy was engaged. In close collaboration with representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Environmental Authority (NMA), the EMSAGS Project, technical experts, and stakeholders from the sector, a draft strategy was developed.
On 25 May 2026, the validation workshop for the National Strategy for Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining in Suriname 2026–2036 was held. The workshop was officially opened by the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. David Abiamofo. In his opening remarks, he emphasized the importance of participation, transparency, inclusiveness, equal opportunities, and accountable governance as key principles for the future development of the sector.
The workshop brought together a broad range of stakeholders to validate the strategy, identify challenges and opportunities, and strengthen support for its implementation.
The primary objective of the strategy is to transform the artisanal and small-scale gold mining sector into a responsible, formalized, and sustainable sector. To achieve this, the strategy focuses on technological innovation, environmental management, health and safety, effective monitoring and enforcement, community development, and strengthened governance and formalization.
With this strategy, Suriname is taking an important step toward a future in which economic development goes hand in hand with environmental protection, social responsibility, and sustainable development for the benefit of present and future generations.
