Belgrade, 23 June 2025 – To mark International Women in Engineering Day, celebrated globally on 23 June, a workshop was held at the Science Club of the Centre for the Promotion of Science. The event was designed to inspire and empower girls to consider careers in science and technology. The workshop was a part of a broader initiative to strengthen girls’ interest in STEM fields and to challenge gender stereotypes that continue to influence their career choices – such as the belief that technology is reserved only for boys.
The workshop brought together sixth- and seventh-grade students from primary schools across Belgrade, aiming to introduce them to the opportunities available in information technology and engineering – sectors where women still represent only around 15% of the global workforce.

At the start of the programme, the participants heard inspiring stories of women who have left a lasting mark on the history of technology – Ada Lovelace, a pioneer of programming; Grace Hopper, who developed the first computer programme to translate code between programming languages; and Radia Perlman, who made significant contributions to the development of internet protocols. Through these examples, the girls were shown that they too can play a key role in shaping the future of technology.
The workshop was led by Aleksandra Savić, a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, who introduced the basics of web programming in a simple and engaging way. During the hands-on session, each participant created her first website on a topic of her own choosing – from favourite hobbies and school subjects to digital messages of support for other girls.
The workshop was organised as part of the project “Building Key Computing Competencies – Towards the Workforce of the Future”, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Petlja Foundation, with support from the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
