Innovative Solutions Presented by 20 Women Entrepreneurs from Serbia
Women’s Innovations Accelerate the Circular Economy
November 26, 2025
Belgrade, 27 November 2025 – The Ministry of Environmental Protection and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) presented 20 innovative solutions developed by women entrepreneurs from Serbia, awarded under the Public Call to strengthen the role of women in the circular economy. The event was organised with the support of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The awarded entrepreneurs come from different parts of Serbia and have designed circular solutions in sectors such as agriculture, architecture, food production, cosmetics, and textiles. Implementing these solutions will help reduce waste and conserve natural resources, while fostering women’s entrepreneurship and offering sustainable products and services on the market.
Teodora Spasojević, Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, emphasised that the Ministry is committed to developing the circular economy as one of the tools for achieving sustainable development.
“In partnership with UNDP, we provide support to local communities, as well as to the business and research sectors, in implementing innovative ideas and solutions for applying circular economy principles. This year, our focus is on supporting women’s entrepreneurship in the circular economy and informal waste collectors”, said Spasojević.
Team Leader on Resilient Development at UNDP Serbia, Žarko Petrović, stated that UNDP supports the development of the circular economy as part of a broader initiative to accelerate the green transition, implemented with the support of the European Union, Sweden, Switzerland, the Government of Serbia, and GEF.
“To date, we have secured co-financing worth USD 4 million, enabling more than 100 circular initiatives and investments across Serbia, with a total value exceeding USD 30 million. These initiatives are already contributing to waste reduction, conservation of natural resources, and the creation of green jobs”, Petrović said.
The total prize fund allocated for women entrepreneurs’ circular initiatives amounted to USD 240,000, with individual awards ranging from USD 5,000 to USD 20,000, depending on the complexity of the innovation.
Jelena Janković from the association Zona Eksperimenta, which produces furniture from construction textile waste, said the circular award was a key incentive for launching the Eco×Deco initiative, which combines recycling, design, and women’s entrepreneurship.
“The support enabled me to turn material that usually has no value into a product, and the entire process was tangible, encouraging, and inspiring. This experience showed me that small ideas can become significant steps forward when they receive the right kind of support”, Janković said.
The award was also crucial for entrepreneur Mina Vereš, who developed a natural Tamjanika grape juice, TamTaNika, and processes grape pomace into a biomass-based superfood supplement.
“Thanks to this support, we began researching the nutritional properties of flour made from grape pomace after juice production. This project represents our first step towards full waste valorisation and creating new, healthy products from local resources”, Vereš explained.
In addition to women’s innovations, the event showcased initiatives awarded under last year’s UNDP public calls in the field of circular economy – for collaboration between science and business, as well as for supporting the integration of informal waste collectors into the formal waste management system. Initiatives implemented by major companies in Serbia – Delta Holding, Nestlé, and Steel Impex – in response to the Ministry’s Circular Challenge were also presented, setting an example for other, smaller companies in agriculture, hospitality, and the recycling industry.
This event was organised within the framework of the project “Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Local Communities through Circular Economy Principles in the Republic of Serbia – Circular Communities”, implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia, with financial support from GEF.
