UNDP’s Annual Review at the Ministry of Finance, Nepal charts course for future collaborations

Kathmandu, Nepal– The Ministry of Finance of Nepal and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nepal jointly hosted the 2024 Annual Programme Review today in Kathmandu. The event brought together senior government officials, development partners, private sector, and community-based organizations to assess ongoing initiatives and align strategies for future development priorities.
The review was co-chaired by Mr Dhani Ram Sharma, Joint Secretary at the International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division (IECCD), Ministry of Finance, and Ms Kyoko Yokosuka, Resident Representative of UNDP Nepal.
Mr Dhani Ram Sharma, in his remarks, commended the longstanding collaboration between the Government of Nepal and UNDP. He highlighted UNDP's critical contributions in advancing Nepal's development agenda, particularly in areas such as democratic governance, climate resilience, disaster mitigation, and capacity-building at various government levels. Mr Sharma emphasized the importance of continued strategic dialogue and partnerships for effectively addressing national priorities and emerging challenges under Nepal’s federal governance framework. He further noted the government’s focus on enabling a conducive business and investment environment, with the new budget prioritizing private sector development and job creation. He urged all development partners to align their efforts with these priorities to ensure Nepal's economic transformation.
In addressing the gathering, UNDP Resident Representative Ms Kyoko Yokosuka expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from the Government of Nepal and other partners. Acknowledging the challenges faced by development activities globally and in Nepal, she reiterated UNDP's commitment to enhancing efficiency and localized support. Ms Yokosuka emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts involving the government, civil society, the private sector, and other international development partners. She highlighted how UNDP's convening capacity enables stakeholders to deliver impactful, inclusive, and sustainable development results and scale successful initiatives.
Mr Julien Chevillard, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Nepal, presented a comprehensive review of UNDP’s 2024 accomplishments. Key results spanned governance, inclusive growth, environmental conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and disaster resilience. He underscored UNDP’s pivotal role in supporting Nepal’s Least Developed Country (LDC) graduation process by offering integrated national financing frameworks and innovative financing solutions. He also highlighted how UNDP integrates renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, climate-adaptive livelihoods, and disaster preparedness to enhance community resilience.
Krishna Dhakal, Joint Secretary, Division Chief of the United Nations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, extended gratitude to UNDP for its continued partnership and contributions to federal governance, climate resilience, and innovative financing. Both the Government of Nepal and UNDP reaffirmed their commitment to tackling Nepal’s evolving development challenges while fostering shared opportunities. He stated "This collaboration aims to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for all Nepalese citizens."
The 2024 Annual Programme Review concluded on a positive note, with both parties reaffirming their ever-strengthening partnership to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the years ahead.
