UNDP Nepal's Resident Representative, Kyoko Yokosuka's speech on the occasion of 2569th Buddha Jayanti
June 13, 2025
Namaste and it is an immense honor for me to be here in Lumbini on this sacred and celebratory occasion of the 2,569th Buddha Jayanti and Lumbini Day 2082.
Lumbini is not just a spiritual destination, it is a living testament to peace, compassion, and mindfulness. These are not just Buddhist principles—they are universal values that unite us across cultures, nations, and generations.
The United Nations has been a partner in the development of Lumbini since as early as the 1950s. When the then UN Secretary-General U Thant visited Lumbini in 1967, he envisioned this sacred site as a global centre of pilgrimage and peace. That vision led to the establishment of the Lumbini Development Project and the commissioning of the renowned Kenzo Tange Master Plan—supported by UNDP and UNESCO. Finalized in 1978, this master plan remains a foundational roadmap, balancing spiritual sanctity with sustainable growth.
Since then, over the decades, UNDP supported the Lumbini Integrated Rural Development Project, initiated feasibility studies for infrastructure such as a second international airport, and helped build local capacities for planning, tourism, and environmental management.
Our collaboration with the Lumbini Province Government and local governments, including Lumbini Sanskritik Municipality, has focused on localizing the Sustainable Development Goals, generating livelihoods and green jobs, enhancing disaster resilience, and promoting integrated waste management. These efforts aim to ensure that the spiritual significance of Lumbini is accompanied by a thriving, inclusive local economy and an empowered community.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, visited Lumbini in October 2023. His message reaffirmed Lumbini’s vital role in fostering peace and coexistence. In his words, “In a world of divisions and conflicts, Lumbini stands as a beacon of unity and non-violence.” Inspired by Lord Buddha’s teachings, he called for action to uphold human dignity, bridge divides, realize the Sustainable Development Goals, and restore our planet’s health.
At UNDP, we believe that development rooted in peace, inclusion, and dignity is the most enduring form of progress. We will continue working alongside the Government of Nepal, the Lumbini Development Trust, Provincial/Local Governments and all partners to advance this sacred site—not just as a destination for spiritual seekers, but as a model of sustainable, peaceful, and people-centred development.
May the light of the Buddha’s wisdom continue to guide our collective journey toward peace, prosperity, and planetary harmony.
Happy Buddha Jayanti and Lumbini Day.
Thank you.
