UNDP and the RS Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency signed a Memorandum of Understanding

CBIT project

November 11, 2022

The Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Steliana Nedera, and the Director of the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency of the Republika Srpska, Srđan Todorović, signed today in Banja Luka a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that provides a framework for stronger future cooperation between UNDP and the Fund.

The topics of cooperation are very important for UNDP's work program, both in the RS and in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and include, among others, work on environmental protection, waste reduction, increase of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources.

This was organized within the project "Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency" (CBIT), financed by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

I am very pleased that today we signed this MoU, which confirms our readiness to continue working together and for building our long-standing partnership. In the last three years, UNDP has managed in the RS some 50 million USD of overall funds through various projects, out of which some 30 million USD were combined funds directed to energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources. Climate change becomes an urgency and emergency for all of us, as we can see from the ongoing Climate Change Conference COP27 in Egypt, the call is very much on implementation of measures to slow down climate change. In this context, our cooperation with the RS Fund in the future is very important, to be able to scale up the measures and mechanisms to introduce more positive changes in more houses, for more people, in more communities. Therefore, we continue to work together and I am very grateful for today's confirmation of our partnership.
Steliana Nedera, UNDP’s Resident Representative in BiH
We have a long-standing cooperation with UNDP, which is one of our most important international partners in the preparation and implementation of environmental protection and energy efficiency projects. Through the joint projects with UNDP in previous years, over 20 million BAM of donor funds were implemented only through the Fund. Energy efficiency measures were carried out in over 70 public buildings in the RS, mainly in the health and education sectors, and many other results were achieved. Today we talked about current and future joint projects and plans in these areas. It is important to emphasize that thanks to the cooperation with UNDP during all these years, we managed to build our own capacities for the implementation of projects financed by international donors, under the supervision of UNDP.
Srđan Todorović, Director of the RS Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency

UNDP is providing significant support to the authorities in BiH to fulfill their climate pledge given in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which is at the heart of the Paris Agreement and represents the promise of countries to reduce their national emissions and adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.
