The UNDP project team under the Water for Resilience (W4R) Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, recently visited farmers across the Marquis Watershed in Saint Lucia.
January 2026 - UNDP’s team for the Water for Resilience (W4R) Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, visited farmers across the Marquis Watershed in Saint Lucia, one of the project’s key areas of work.
These visits helped gather important insights on farmers’ interest in establishing and maintaining riparian buffer zones, as well as identifying priority tree crops to support riverbank protection, improve water quality and support sustainable livelihoods.
Over the coming months, the team will continue collaborating with farmers, youth, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, the Agriculture Extension Office for Regions 1 and 2, the Forestry Department and the Water Resources Management Agency to design and implement a ‘Cash for Trees’ programme alongside a soil and water quality monitoring programme in Saint Lucia, aimed at strengthening water security for beneficiaries in the Marquis community.
The "Strengthening Resilient Water Resource Management in the Eastern Caribbean" (Water for Resilience - W4R) Project is designed to support vulnerable communities in the islands of Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to increase access to secure, nature-friendly water supplies and enhance ecosystem conservation for improved water resources management, both in communities and at the governance level. The project also includes a regional knowledge-sharing component to enhance water management practices.
