Potential for Improving Energy Efficiency in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Sector in Uzbekistan

April 27, 2022

The energy efficiency in refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector aimed at improving energy consumption of RAC equipment and promoting energy efficient technologies in the cooling and refrigeration sector in the country. The joint project of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Ecology and Environmental Protection, UNDP and GEF ‘Complete HCFC Phase-out in Uzbekistan through Promotion of Zero ODS Low GWP Energy Efficient Technologies’ jointly with the UNECE Regular Programme of Technical Cooperation conducted case study to support Uzbekistan to reduce electricity consumption in RAC sector and achieve commitments under the Paris Agreement.

The primary objective of the study is to explore energy consumption in the housing sector, analyze energy efficiency in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, identify technological options for increasing energy efficiency and lowering carbon intensity, identify successful business models and policy options to support improved energy productivity and decarbonization of industry in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Economic analysis has shown that countries that integrate energy efficiency into their HCFC phase-out and HFC phase-down programmes can create savings for consumers and reduce carbon and air pollution emissions by reducing energy consumption, allowing manufacturers to rationally plan their investments in re-engineering and refurbishment.
