Our focus

Uzbekistan and UNDP in action

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been working with the people and Government of Uzbekistan to support their development ambitions since 1993, just two years after the country declared its independence, to support their development ambitions.. As articulated in the Country Programme Document for 2021-2025, current programmatic priorities are guided by and aligned with Agenda 2030, which sets out a comprehensive blueprint for sustainable development, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our focus areas are strongly aligned with the National Development Strategy of Uzbekistan (2022-2026) and include programmes to promote effective democratic governance, achieve inclusive and sustainable growth, sustain a clean environment, take action for the climate, and advocate for equality between men and women.

Effective Governance

UNDP in Uzbekistan focuses on supporting government initiatives that promote inclusive public institutions and legislation providing enabling rights-based environment for equal participation of women and men in decision-making at the central and local levels and for equal access to justice and public services, leaving noone behind. Our goal is to safeguard an inclusive, peaceful, secure, and cohesive society based on the rule of law. To achieve this, we advocate for and advise on inclusive dialogue, consensus-building, and strengthening responsive institutions that support an enabling environment for everyone to grow in strength and contribute towards national development.

Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

UNDP’s work to enhance economic development in the Republic of Uzbekistan comes at an important time, as it continues its gradual economic transition and UNDP Uzbekistan is committed to promoting new approaches to understanding and addressing poverty and multidimensional inequalities, while building policy coherence and financing mechanisms for development that align with national SDGs as well as working towards socio-economic empowerment of women and young people for the wellbeing of the country.

Environment and Climate Action

Uzbekistan’s increasing population and urbanization require a more sustainable use of natural resources and an end to unsustainable consumption and production patterns. The country is particularly vulnerable to the consequences of climate change, and therefore, it is essential to decarbonize its industrial, agricultural, and transport sectors while adapting to new realities. UNDP supports the government on the way to building resilience to climate change and disasters, and making the most use of increasingly sustainable, gender-responsive and efficient management of natural resources, inclusive environmental governance and protection.

Gender Equality

UNDP recognizes that gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are essential for achieving sustainable development. Gender equality is a human right that provides the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. It is a key component of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and is reflected in 45 targets and 54 gender-specific indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals. Achieving gender equality and closing gender gaps create a multiplier effect across all SDGs and accelerate their achievement.
