May 6, 2026
Tashkent, Uzbekistan – May 6, 2026. Today The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Pre-school and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan handed over 4,060 “Climate Box” educational toolkits to schools across the country. The ceremony took place at School No. 255 in Tashkent.
The initiative aims to strengthen climate education nationwide by equipping teachers with practical, ready-to-use materials and increasing students’ awareness of climate change. Implemented in partnership with the International Zamin Foundation and supported by funding from the Russian Trust Fund, the project prioritizes schools in remote rural areas, helping bridge the gap in access to quality educational resources.
Originally developed by UNDP in 2014, the “Climate Box” has grown into an international programme. It is now available in 17 languages and adapted to national curricula across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and other regions. Recent updates (2023–2026) include updated content and expansion to countries in Southeast Asia.
The toolkit combines printed materials with a digital platform, enabling teachers to deliver interactive and accessible lessons on climate change. It transforms complex environmental topics into practical, engaging classroom activities and supports a modern, student-centered learning approach.
The event brought together representatives from the Ministry of Pre-school and School Education, the International Zamin Foundation, the Embassy of the Russian Federation, UNDP, as well as climate experts and educators. The 4,060 printed copies distributed today are specifically prioritized for remote rural schools, ensuring broader and more equitable access to climate education across Uzbekistan. The handover marks an important step in integrating climate education into the national school system and supporting Uzbekistan’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“The systematic integration of climate education into the national school system is a key priority for Uzbekistan. The handover of these 4,060 Climate Box toolkits strengthens teachers’ capacity across the country, including in remote rural areas, to deliver modern, practice-oriented environmental education to their students,” - was noted by Mr. Azizbek Turdiyev, Deputy Minister of Preschool and School Education
“Building a resilient and sustainable future begins with education. Ensuring broad access to high quality climate learning materials helps create equal opportunities for young people to understand global environmental challenges and actively contribute to climate action in their communities.”- noted Yuri Boichenko, Adviser of the Embassy of the Russian Federation.
"Climate box' is more than just a toolkit; it is a comprehensive, interactive, and engaging program designed to make climate education accessible and exciting for students. The handover of these Climate Boxes marks a significant milestone in our journey. It is a concrete step toward integrating climate change into our national education system and empowering a new generation of green leaders."- said Akiko Fujii, UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan
Through this initiative, partners reaffirm their commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, highlighting climate education as a key driver of a more resilient and sustainable future for Uzbekistan.
