June 30, 2026
Tashkent Region, 26 June 2026 — 30 volunteer students from legal clinics across Uzbekistan gathered in Tashkent Region, for a four-day Summer School dedicated to strengthening access to justice and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities through inclusive legal assistance.
The Summer School, entitled “The Role of Legal Clinics in Ensuring the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Practical Skills, Social Protection, and Inclusive Approaches,” was jointly organized by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Tashkent State University of Law (TSUL).
The initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of volunteer law students working in legal clinics, equipping them to provide more accessible, responsive, and inclusive legal assistance to people with disabilities and other socially vulnerable groups.
The programme was developed in line with Uzbekistan’s commitments under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and ongoing national reforms aimed at strengthening social protection, equality, and access to justice.
During the Summer School, participants explored international human rights standards, including the principles and provisions of the CRPD, international monitoring mechanisms, and good practices for protecting the rights of people with disabilities. Participants also examined Uzbekistan’s national legal framework governing disability rights, social protection measures, employment, education, accessibility, and state support mechanisms.
A key feature of the programme was its practical and interactive approach. Through case studies, role-playing exercises, legal counselling simulations, document analysis, and client interviewing exercises, participants strengthened their ability to provide disability-sensitive legal services and communicate effectively with clients facing complex social situations.
Having brough together experienced legal practitioners and disability experts who shared practical insights on ethical communication, inclusive service delivery, and legal clinic methodologies, the Summer School contributed to strengthening professional networks among legal clinic volunteers and fostering a shared commitment to promoting the rights of persons with disabilities through practical legal support and community engagement.
The Summer School was organized within the framework of the UNDP project “Strengthening the Rule of Law and Human Rights Protection in Uzbekistan”, implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, the Office of the Ombudsperson, and civil society organizations, with financial support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
