Tashkent, 27 August 2025 – UNDP Uzbekistan handed over modern field equipment to three protected natural areas (PNAs) in the Aral Sea region: the Kyzylkum State Reserve, the Saigachiy Integrated (Landscape) Reserve, and the Lower Amudarya Biosphere Reserve.
The newly provided equipment — including solar panels, hybrid generators, camera traps, Nikon cameras, binoculars (including night vision), infrared thermometers, tents, and field uniforms — will strengthen the material and technical base of these protected territories. This will enable more effective conservation, enhance scientific research, and expand environmental monitoring capacities.
The “Conservation and Management of Lakes, Wetlands and Coastal Corridors as a Basis for a Resilient and Land Degradation Neutral Landscape in the Aral Sea Basin that Supports Sustainable Livelihoods” — places biodiversity protection at its core. Protected natural areas are vital in tackling the global biodiversity crisis, helping safeguard species and ecosystems under growing pressure.
The project, jointly implemented by the UNDP and the Ministry of Ecology, Environment Protection, and Climate Change and financially supported by the Global Ecological Fund, works to strengthen ecosystem stability and improve livelihoods in the Lower Amudarya and Aral Sea basins. This includes preventing land degradation, promoting the sustainable use of land and water resources, and supporting protected areas, key biodiversity zones, and important bird habitats. As part of this initiative, modern field equipment was handed over to enhance the protection, monitoring, and scientific research capacity of protected natural areas.
Within its Component 3, the project specifically addresses direct threats to biodiversity, protects globally important habitats and species, and strengthens the management effectiveness of existing protected areas. Through equipping these PNAs, the project will help intensify protection of territories, improve the detection and prevention of environmental violations, and raise the quality of scientific monitoring and research.
