Saamaka-Matawai landscape & Coeroeni-Paroe landscape

Project Summary:

This initiative, led by Suriname’s Ministry of Land Policy and Forest Management (GBB) under a Partial National Implementation Modality (NIM), aims to enhance the sustainable management of the Surinamese Amazon’s protected and productive landscapes.  Strengthen protected area (PA) management. Promote sustainable livelihoods through agroforestry, nature tourism, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). Improve land use planning and monitoring systems. Develop inclusive, gender-sensitive governance and policy frameworks. Protected Landscapes: Improve conservation and reduce threats.


Objective:

To secure equitable management of Suriname’s protected and productive landscapes through integrated approaches that deliver mutually supportive conservation and sustainable livelihood benefits. The project aims to:

Improve sustainable forestry practices

Strengthen protected areas management

Promote sustainable livelihoods (agroforestry, nature tourism, non-timber forest products)

Enhance land use planning and monitoring

Contribute to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation

The ASL2 Suriname project (“Strengthening Management of Protected and Productive Landscapes in the Surinamese Amazon”) is part of the regional Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program (ASL2), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Land Policy and Forest Management (GBB).


Recent Activities & Results:

Road and Facility Rehabilitation: ASL2 supported the clearing and rehabilitation of the road to Brownsberg and refurbishment of STINASU facilities, enabling better access for conservation, tourism, and community activities.

Community Training: 150 residents from Upper Suriname received training in hospitality and tourism, including courses in first aid, customer care, agroforestry, tour guiding, and more. This empowers local communities and strengthens the tourism sector.

Capacity Building: Ongoing training and support for local communities, with a focus on women’s empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.

Policy & Institutional Strengthening: Support for the Ministry of GBB and other partners to improve planning, coordination, and management of forest resources and protected areas.
