Saida, Lebanon, 26 August 2026 — Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mr. Espen Barth Eide announced an additional contribution of US$1.5 million in support of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), during a visit to the Mohammad Zgheib Barracks, headquarters of the LAF’s South Regional Command in Saida.

During the visit, Minister Barth Eide was briefed on the LAF’s role and priorities, toured the barrack's healthcare facility - which serves as the main military medical hub for the south - visited a commissary rehabilitated with international support through UNDP, and was briefed on ongoing solarization works.

In his remarks, the Lebanese Armed Forces Commander of South Sector, Brigadier General Andre Haddad said: “Your visit today represents an important milestone in our shared journey toward a stronger and more stable Lebanon. Norway's continued support reflects the depth of this partnership and the confidence placed in the vital role of the LAF in safeguarding Lebanon's sovereignty, unity and security.”

UN Deputy Special Coordinator, Mr. Imran Riza said:  “One thing Lebanese people can agree upon is the criticality of their army and, importantly, the need to ensure due support and dignity for its members. The LAF has a heavy burden on its shoulders as it stands at the vanguard of the extension of the authority of the Lebanese State. These efforts deserve the continued support of the international community. ”

UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon a.i. Mr. Thair Shraideh said: “Investing in the people who carry the institution is part of what enables the LAF to fulfil its mission. Supporting the everyday conditions of service eases the pressure on personnel and their families so they can carry out their duties. Norway’s consistent partnership allows us to respond to immediate pressures while investing in the LAF for the longer term, including through support to explosive ordnance clearance, which remains a precondition for the safe return of people to their homes and fields.”
