Excellencies, friends,

Today we celebrate 60 years of partnership between the Government and the people of Nepal and UNDP – built on trust and a shared commitment to a prosperous future for Nepal.

Over these years, UNDP has worked alongside Nepal through its remarkable journey. Never a straight line but always looking forward.

UNDP supported the introduction of Nepal’s very first computer, transforming how the country approaches data and planning. We helped introduce the first Pilatus Porter aircraft to reach remote mountain communities and deliver essential services.

Together we have supported Nepal’s peace process, the transition to a federal democratic republic, and building institutions in service of Nepal’s human development.

But the real story is not just about policies or milestones. It has always been about close engagement with people across the country driving change through their innovation, leadership, and sheer resilience.

In the high Himalayas, communities act early to protect their homes from glacial floods. In the remote hills of Bajura, women use digital tools to manage micro-hydro plants, bringing light, income, and new opportunities to their villages. Along several major trekking trails, young deaf guides redefine inclusive tourism. And in Dhangadhi, women transform waste into businesses.

Today, Nepal stands at an important juncture. Progress has been significant, but the country also faces complex new challenges: climate risk, the need for more inclusive growth, and accelerating energy security and digital transformation.

The task ahead is clear: scale what works, ensure services, jobs and innovation reach those still behind, and empower a young generation to lead.

Today, we celebrate the past as we look towards the future, where UNDP’s focus is behind national priorities on strengthening governance to deliver for all; accelerating climate action to protect Nepal’s natural assets; and supporting economic transformation through green and decent jobs for all.

The engagement of UNDP with Nepal continues to be about navigating change and helping Nepal direct its future.
And this continues to be the spirit of this treasured partnership.
Thank you. Dhanyabad.
