22 October 2025, Tashkent — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, launched in September 2021 by the UN Secretary-General, has initiated a comprehensive capacity-building activity for SME support-centers of Business Development Bank in Uzbekistan. This initiative represents a significant milestone in strengthening non-financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises across the country.

The training programme  is designed to equip staff with practical tools and knowledge to better serve entrepreneurs in diverse sectors. The event was attended by Ravshan Yunusov, UNDP Inclusive Growth Cluster Leader and Jasur Makhmudov, BDB Small Business Development Department Director.

“The overarching goal of this training workshop is to strengthen the support for SMEs by enhancing the capacity and quality of non-financial services provided by SME centers”, said Mr. Yunusov, emphasizing the strategic importance of the training. “Specifically, the training aims to help BDB employees effectively provide SME clients with critical business information and access to self-help tools.”

The participants attending this course come from various regional branches. They work directly with business clients, helping them scale up production by providing loans. However, today’s business environment demands more than just financial support. Clients increasingly seek assistance with maintaining accounting records, identifying new markets and partners, and other services that traditional banks typically do not offer.

“I hope that by the end of the course, BDB staff will be equipped to provide SMEs with access to valuable business resources. My colleagues look forward to mastering tools essential for non-financial business advising and gain enhanced competence in organizing SME support events. Moreover, each SME center’s consultant will develop a personal action plan to integrate these new skills into their daily work.” added Mr. Makhmudov in his concluding remarks.

On October 26, all participants successfully completed the training programme and were awarded certificates of completion, marking a significant milestone in their professional development. This achievement also contributed to strengthening BDB’s capacity in delivering non-financial services, enhancing its ability to support clients beyond traditional financial offerings.
