GEF6 - Eliminating POPs through Sound Management of Chemicals
Summary
This project aims to reduce the risk of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and other hazardous chemicals in the Maldives through environmentally sound waste management practices. It leverages national priorities identified in the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) to promote sustainable environmental health.
Background
The Maldives faces increasing environmental and public health risks due to poor waste management and the presence of hazardous chemicals. In response, this project was initiated in partnership with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy and is aligned with national interest to mitigate the effects of POPs. The initiative is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with a total resource envelope of USD 3,675,000. The project runs from 2019 to 2026.
As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), the Maldives faces unique health care waste management challenges. This issue has gained significant importance, primarily due to the absence of infrastructure capable of managing waste generated in health care facilities, whether on-site or at municipal solid waste management sites. These challenges were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has strained an already overburdened waste management system.
Project Outcomes:
The project aims to achieve the following outcomes:
- Strengthened national frameworks for chemical and waste management
- Reduced use and disposal of POPs and hazardous chemicals
- Enhanced public and institutional capacity in environmentally sound waste practices
- Improved national infrastructure and systems for monitoring and controlling toxic substances
GESI / GEWE Component
While the project does not have a specific gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) component explicitly outlined, capacity-building and public awareness activities are designed to reach diverse groups, including women and vulnerable communities, to ensure inclusive participation in environmental health initiatives.
Major Achievements
- Alignment of national chemical management strategies with international standards
- Training and capacity-building sessions held for government and local waste management operators
- Development of regulatory frameworks to reduce POPs usage and promote safer alternatives
