A metaphorical chautari: Reflecting on six decades of development in Nepal

In the heart of Nepal’s vibrant communities, chautari—a shaded resting place beneath ancient banyan and peepal trees—is where people pause, reflect, share stories, and look ahead together.

As UNDP Nepal marked 60 years of partnership with the Government and people of Nepal, we found ourselves at our own metaphorical chautari: reflecting on six decades of shared progress, resilience, and hope.

Surrounded by the very partners who have made this journey possible, the event was both a heartfelt celebration of past milestones and a forward-looking dialogue on the future of sustainable development in the Himalayan country.

A homecoming for a development champion

The commemorative event was joined by the Hon’ble Minister of Finance, Dr Swarnim Wagle, who delivered a resonating keynote address as a UNDP alumnus.

In his address, Hon’ble Minister traced the trajectory of Nepal's development and highlighted UNDP’s catalytic role throughout the decades. He emphasized how UNDP has consistently helped seed vital investments that bridge the gap between policy and practice. Dr. Wagle commended UNDP's continued engagement in climate action and democratic governance and focussed on the need for stronger cross-border collaboration and regional integration.

He also mentioned contributing to the landmark Nepal Human Development Report in the 1990's, and later to the Global Human Development Report 2012, helping shape conversations on human development both in Nepal and in the global arena respectively.

'National ownership is the road to real transformation'

At the heart of UNDP's six-decade partnership with Nepal is a simple belief: lasting change must be led by the people it serves.

"Nepal's development achievements are, first and foremost, Nepal's achievements," said UNDP Resident Representative Kyoko Yokosuka. "From helping communities recover from the earthquakes to advancing Nepal’s digital and green transitions, our role has always been to support national priorities and help unlock investments at scale.”

Where early decades may have focused on foundational infrastructure and basic capacity building, UNDP’s recent collaboration is characterized by innovative financing, leveraging technology for inclusive growth, and ensuring that Nepal’s graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status is both smooth and sustainable.

Development is ultimately about people

Adding a broader United Nations perspective to the reflections, UN Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia reminded the audience that development is ultimately about people—their dignity, opportunities, and aspirations.

"What UNDP brought was not simply technology, it brought possibility. It changed lives, and in many ways, it changed the destiny of entire communities."
Lila Pieters Yahia, UN Resident Coordinator, Nepal

Her words reaffirmed that there is a human face behind every 60-year milestone: a woman opening her first business, a marginalized community finding its voice, and a farmer securing tomorrow’s harvest. These aren't just project outcomes—they are the stories that define Nepal's development journey.

A coalition of change-makers

The event brought together a diverse coalition of partners, mirroring the inclusive approach needed to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representatives from the Government of Nepal were joined by mayors and local leaders from across the provinces, alongside ambassadors, international development partners, civil society groups, and private sector leaders. This gathering underscored a shared reality: sustainable development requires a whole-of-society effort.

To visually capture this journey, guests were invited to explore a curated photo exhibition chronicling the evolving landscape of Nepal—from the high Himalayas to the southern plains—and the parallel evolution of UNDP’s work. The event also marked the official launch of a commemorative photobook that showcased the innovation, determination, and resilience of the Nepali people, who have always been, and will always remain, the true drivers of Nepal’s development.

Looking to tomorrow, together

None of this progress would have been possible without the profound trust of our partners. UNDP extends a heartfelt thank you to the Government of Nepal, our development partners, civil society, the private sector, and most importantly, the resilient communities at the heart of our work.

For 60 years, our shared commitment has proven that collective action is the truest catalyst for lasting change.

Finally, we recognize that behind every milestone, every successful project, and every policy shifted, there are dedicated people who make this partnership possible. UNDP extends its deepest gratitude to colleagues across Nepal—both past and present for their unparalleled commitment, technical expertise, and hard work in the field and the office, that has helped turn ambitious ideas into concrete action.

As we depart from our chautari and resume the development journey, we look ahead with the very same spirit of hope and collaboration that has guided us since our inception.

Today, we celebrate what we have achieved. Tomorrow, we will continue the journey toward a greener, more inclusive, and resilient Nepal—together.
