December 11, 2025
Supported by the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by UNDP with the FAO Mountain Partnership, this 'Melting Mountain initiative is strengthening food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity in Samagaun and Samdo.
With SGP support, the community has built 62 bioclimatic greenhouses, cut potato wart by 70%, and expanded a rose hip value chain now benefitting 565 households. Women’s leadership has grown through training for 47 women and a new climate-smart community house. Through TCN and H.E.L.P., the region is restoring 20 hectares of forest, cultivating 50,000+ seedlings, and scaling sustainable livelihoods—earning the UNDP Equator Prize 2023 for its innovative blend of Indigenous knowledge and climate resilience.
