Restoring Hope: Narratives from UNDP's Cash-for-Work initiative

July 3, 2025

In the aftermath of the devastating floods and landslides of September 2024, which claimed 249 lives and caused economic losses exceeding USD 354 million, UNDP Nepal, in partnership with local governments, launched a community-driven cash-for-work initiative in the hardest-hit areas of Kavrepalanchok and Lalitpur districts.

Through small-scale infrastructure restoration activities, over 800 households not only earned vital income but also helped restore essential community assets such as irrigation ponds, roads, and drinking water systems.

This booklet presents firsthand narratives from the ground, illustrating how timely, inclusive, and community-led efforts can restore hope and dignity while strengthening the long-term resilience of affected communities.
