What is human security?
Human security is an approach in identifying and addressing widespread and cross-cutting challenges to the survival, livelihood and dignity of the people . This approach also helps in strengthening resilience to climate change and natural disasters and contributes to sustainable development.  

What is climate action?
According to UNDP, climate action means “stepped-up efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-induced impacts, including: climate-related hazards in all countries; integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning; and improving education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity with respect to climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.”  

What does the “Enhancing human security through local climate actions project do?
The project aims to build a comprehensive approach on climate change adaptation and resilience through local actions, with a focus on human security considerations. The project component includes adaptive agriculture, energy, early warning, community infrastructure and capacity building of local government and community.

Who is the donor of EHSLCA?
It is financially supported by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP.

Does it support the earthquake affected communities?
The project is leveraged to support the earthquake affected communities – those affected by the Western Nepal Earthquake of 3 November 2023 - through energy solutions for early recovery in Jajakot and West Rukum Districts.

How many people will benefit from the project?
•    Over 40,000 people to be benefited by the early warning system
•    3000 households to be supported on clean cooking
•    Over 1100 Community members/students/teachers/community leader and officials to be trained on resilience
•    200 green jobs created for community
•    500 households to benefit from green infrastructure

Gender and social inclusion will be the key considerations in planning and implementation of the project.

How long is the project duration?
This project is from March 2023 to December 2024.

The project is implemented in Bheri Municipality, Nalgad Municipality and Barekot Rural Municipality of Jajarkot District, and Aathbiskot Municipality and Sani Bheri Rural Municipality in Rukum West District in Karnali Province.

•    Improved human security in project area through early warming, adaptive agriculture, smart energy solutions and community infrastructures
•    Municipalities capacitated on human security and local climate action informed development planning
•    Community volunteers, students and teachers trained on emergency response and mitigation
