During her official mission to the Maldives, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP’s Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, witnessed the signing of a significant UK Partnership Agreement aimed at promoting the growth of the Blue Economy. The agreement, co-signed by the UK High Commissioner, focuses on empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the Blue Economy sector through blended finance mechanisms. This innovative approach combines public and private funding to provide MSMEs with the financial tools they need to thrive in sustainable economic activities, such as fisheries, marine tourism, and coastal conservation.

The partnership underscores a commitment to fostering sustainable economic development while preserving the Maldives’ vital marine ecosystems. By supporting MSMEs, the initiative aims to boost local entrepreneurship, create jobs, and drive inclusive growth in ways that protect and enhance marine resources. The signing of this agreement marks a significant step in advancing the Maldives' Blue Economy, further strengthening international cooperation for sustainable development in the region.
