May 20, 2026
Handover of three electric vehicles to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) under the CIDCA funded Thayyaaru Project.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS), together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and representatives from the Government of China, officially marked the handover of three electric vehicles procured under the Thayyaaru – Strengthening the Actionable Early Warning Systems in the Maldives project during a ceremony held at the MMS headquarters in Hulhulé’.
The handover reflects the continued partnership between MMS, UNDP, and the Government of China in strengthening operational capacities while promoting sustainable and climate-resilient services across the Maldives.
Funded through the Government of China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund (GDF), the Thayyaaru Project is implemented by UNDP in partnership with MMS to enhance the Maldives’ multi-hazard early warning systems. The initiative focuses on improving weather monitoring and forecasting capacities, increasing accessibility to early warning information, and strengthening institutional capacities for climate and disaster risk management.
The addition of electric vehicles to MMS operations supports environmentally sustainable transportation while enhancing the institution’s ability to carry out essential operational and field-based activities more efficiently.
The ceremony included the arrival of guests, recitation of the Quran, opening remarks by the Master of Ceremonies, the official handover of keys, and a tour of the MMS facilities.
Through initiatives such as Thayyaaru, UNDP and its partners continue to support the Maldives in building resilience against climate-related risks and strengthening systems that protect communities and livelihoods nationwide.
