28 October 2025 – Maldives: New Healthcare Waste Management Facilities were officially handed over at HA. Dhidhoo Atoll Hospital and HDh. Vaikaradhoo Health Centre, advancing efforts to make healthcare delivery in the Maldives safer, more sustainable, and climate-smart.

Established through a joint partnership between WHO, the Ministry of Health, the Government of Canada, and UNDP Maldives, these facilities are part of a broader initiative to strengthen healthcare waste management systems and promote environmentally responsible health services across the country.

The initiative supports the Maldives’ commitment to a low-carbon, resilient future, ensuring that healthcare systems protect both people and the planet. By improving the management of healthcare waste, it helps reduce risks to health workers and communities while minimizing environmental harm.

The handover ceremonies brought together representatives from WHO Maldives, UNDP Maldives, the Ministry of Health, and local authorities, reaffirming a shared vision to embed sustainability and resilience into the heart of public health delivery.

Together, partners are helping shape a future where strong health systems and a healthy environment go hand in hand.
