Strengthening Sustainable Agriculture and Healthcare in Fuvahmulah: Japan and UNDP Partnership
May 28, 2025
On May 28, an engagement took place in Fuvahmulah with H.E. Ambassador Ishigami Rumiko of Japan, Dr. Maryam Mariya, Minister of Agriculture, and the UNDP Maldives team. The visit highlighted the strong partnership between Japan and UNDP in advancing sustainable development in the island community.
A key milestone was the handover of laboratory and training equipment under the Project for Developing Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE), funded by Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). The initiative supports local farmers in adopting modern techniques and scientific training to improve productivity and build a more resilient agricultural sector.
Another important development is the near completion of a new healthcare waste management facility, also supported by Japan. Once equipment installation and staff training are complete, the facility will enhance public health protection and environmental safety.
UNDP Maldives remains committed to working with the Government of Japan and local partners to empower communities, promote smarter farming, and build healthier, more resilient futures.
