Malé, Maldives — The Maldives is home to some of the world’s most valuable coral reef ecosystems, which are vital to its environment, communities and economy.

Building on the 2025 assessment of Parametric Coral Reef Insurance, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and UNDP Maldives, with support from BIOFIN and technical advice from AXA Climate, are exploring insurance policy options that could help strengthen financial protection for coral reefs and environmental assets.

The initiative brings together regulators, insurers and technical experts to explore how nature-based insurance solutions can complement existing conservation efforts and help build greater resilience for the Maldives’ fragile marine ecosystems.

Through this work, partners are exploring innovative approaches to mobilise finance for nature and strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to protect the ecosystems on which its people and economy depend.
