From 23 to 27 November 2025, young people from Addu City came together for a dynamic and interactive Civic Education Program, designed to deepen their understanding of governance, rights, and community participation. The week opened with an atmosphere filled with curiosity, excitement, and enthusiasm as participants began exploring the foundations of civic life.

During the first two days, youth examined community values, identified key stakeholder groups, and reflected on the Maldives’ democratic journey. They mapped out youth concerns and local opportunities, and delved into essential concepts such as governance systems, human rights, and social inclusion. These sessions set a strong platform for the days that followed.

As the programme progressed, participants engaged in hands-on activities focusing on the roles and responsibilities of government institutions, representation and elections, digital literacy, and accountability tools. These discussions equipped young people with practical knowledge and skills to become more confident and informed community actors.

UNDP Maldives extends its appreciation to the Addu City Council, whose team shared insights into the important work of local councils and development planning in Addu City, helping participants better understand how local governance functions in practice.

A visit to the Koshidhorage private collection enriched the programme by connecting civic learning with local heritage and culture, offering youth a deeper sense of community identity and history.

The programme also featured interactive sessions led by Nalafehi Meedhoo, Manta Trust, What’s Up?, and Project Thimaaveshi. Their contributions provided participants with practical knowledge, valuable lessons learned, and clear pathways for youth to engage meaningfully in community development and environmental stewardship.

A special acknowledgement goes to the Addu Nature Park, whose educational tour highlighted the critical role young people and local communities play in environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

The week concluded with participants gaining fresh perspectives, strengthened civic awareness, and new inspiration to contribute actively to community life in Addu City and beyond.
