Transparency and Accountability in International Assistance

The webinar on “transparency and accountability in international assistance” was held on 9 September 2020 as the first of a series of webinars organized in partnership with the Executive Magazine to advance dialogue on anti-corruption in Lebanon. This webinar tackled a timely theme considering the country’s need for such assistance, especially in the aftermath of the Beirut Port explosion. It is also relevant to assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The roundtable explored how the provision of humanitarian and development assistance can be undermined by corruption and mismanagement, and the various approaches that can be used in the current context of Lebanon to deal with related issues. In doing so, experts drew on related comparative experiences and similar initiatives in the country and elsewhere in the world. The discussions highlighted key risks and provided insights on how different stakeholders can deal with such risks including international partners, government institutions, businesses, non-governmental organizations, the media, target beneficiary groups, and more broadly the general public.
