It is common for a person to not notice what is happening around him or her, but the global ideas of the SDG concern every one of us. So how can we make them become the concern of every Kyrgyz citizen? This was discussed by an expert, journalist and student.
The Kyrgyz Republic, like all other countries in the world, has committed itself to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by 2030, bringing country strategies and development programmes in line with the programme.
The UN adopted the global goals in 2015 for the period until 2030. The SDG consists of 17 goals aimed at economic development, environmental protection and social well-being through the lens of five pillars. They focus on people, the planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. Each goal contains a set of indicators to be achieved within the 15 year period. Achieving them requires joint efforts by government, civil society and businesses. The sustainable development goals are a call to action coming from all countries - poor, rich and medium developed. They aim to improve our planet's well-being and protect it.
Tatyana Tretyakova, coordinator of the National Monitoring and Evaluation Network, noted that the implementation of the SDG is only possible with participation from all stakeholders.
"Only unity and purposeful implementation of the strategy will allow us to implement the SDGs. I believe that before asking people to do anything, they need to understand why the SDGs are important. In order to do so, the first stage is broad public awareness. The media plays a key role in this process, by communicating important concepts and data to everyone, including those who need social assistance.

She stressed that journalists must convey the ideas of the SDGs to the people of Kyrgyzstan in an easily understandable form. Akylbek Ibrayev, the SDG envoy and youth representative, emphasized that one of the challenges of promoting the SDGs in Kyrgyzstan is that very few people know about it and even those who do know very little.
"The mass media is one of the key tools in communicating the SDG objectives to every citizen of our country. It is they who can shape the view of the people of Kyrgyzstan and the impression of the UN programmes depends on how competently and objectively media representatives provide relevant information. This is a great responsibility, and at the same time a great opportunity to promote the Sustainable Development Goals.

Independent journalist Tolkun Namatbaeva notes that achieving the SDGs is important for all Kyrgyz people.
"But there is one problem in SDGs implementation - the population does not understand it. High declarative forms are perceived by ordinary people as something far away, but the well-being of everyone and future of our children depend on how successfully we achieve these goals. We as journalists are trying to convey the UN's message in an easily accessible form because it is very important that the process of implementing the SDG is continuous, as their implementation closely intertwines with many areas. We are trying to be clear about the changes that are planned despite everything and the fact that each of us is capable of changing the world with our own efforts - this is what we are trying to tell the Kyrgyz people.
That is why, she said, the role of the media is more important than ever in advocating the SDGs, in communicating government actions and, ultimately, in developing understanding of the SDGs.

Danil Tsoi, a young activist, noted that he joined the ranks of the United Nations Development Programme volunteers in the summer of 2019.
"Before that, I was actively involved in scientific activities, participating and winning in various conferences. During the process of promoting the goals of developing legal institutions, protecting human rights and the need for assistance for vulnerable people, I faced many misunderstandings - many people simply did not even think about global things. I believe that only by promoting the SDGs and explaining its need will be effective in implementing this UN programme.
The Government of Kyrgyzstan has demonstrated its full commitment to implementing the SDGs and integrating it into the country's strategic development planning cycle. UNDP provides technical expertise and advice to UN Member States to identify gaps and challenges in the implementation of sustainable development goals and helps identify platforms to accelerate implementation of the SDGs - areas for effective, efficient and transparent national and local policies that can stimulate progress on one or more SDGs.
