Climate: Coundown media contest winners
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan, in partnership with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has announced the results of the media contest focused on climate change, biodiversity conservation, and environmental pollution. Nearly 50 media representatives from across Kazakhstan took part in the contest.
Katarzyna Wawiernia, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan
“Today’s event highlights the vital role of the media in promoting climate-related topics across all segments of society, fostering environmental awareness, and inspiring the public to build a climate-resilient economy and society. Raising environmental awareness and improving the quality of media coverage are essential components of a comprehensive response to environmental threats,”highlighted Katarzyna Wawiernia, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan, the largest landlocked country between Europe and Asia, faces a dual challenge: maintaining economic growth while creating conditions to reduce emissions and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. In the context of an escalating climate crisis, participation in international agreements has become a key element of the country’s national development strategy and a catalyst for implementing solutions in climate adaptation, low-carbon development, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education.

As part of the event, UNDP also presented the results of a nationwide sociological survey on public awareness of climate change, its consequences, and adaptation measures. The study was conducted under a joint project between UNDP and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, with support from the Green Climate Fund.
The survey included responses from 3,500 residents across all regions of Kazakhstan. It identified key environmental concerns among citizens and their perceptions of the climate situation at the national, regional, and global levels. The findings are of interest to policymakers, government agencies, NGOs, media, and all stakeholders. They will help shape more effective and people-centered climate adaptation strategies.
The full results of the survey are available online in both Kazakh and Russian at this link.
