UNDP strengthens public procurement skills among government and partner institutions in Kazakhstan

Around the world, governments are under growing pressure to deliver development results efficiently, transparently and sustainably. Strong procurement systems are a key part of that equation, helping countries manage public resources effectively and build trust among citizens, development partners and investors. In Kazakhstan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is supporting these efforts through training for government institutions and development partners.

This week, UNDP in Kazakhstan brought together representatives of partner institutions and UNDP personnel for the public procurement certification training. Accredited by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS), the programme equips participants with internationally recognized procurement knowledge and skills. Participants included representatives of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, Kazvodkhoz, SK Water Solutions, SK Pharmacy, the Kazakh Research Institute of Water Economy and the Information and Analytical Centre.

Building professional capacity in areas such as procurement helps ensure that development resources are managed effectively, strengthens confidence among international partners and investors, and ultimately contributes to better development outcomes for people,”

said Katarzyna Wawiernia, UNDP Resident Representative in Kazakhstan.

At the heart of effective procurement systems are the people who manage them. Ensuring that procurement professionals understand and apply international standards is an important part of building trust and strengthening the effective management of development resources. The training provides a practical introduction to public procurement, covering every stage of the process from planning and risk management to supplier evaluation, contract management and compliance. Participants gain hands-on knowledge and tools that help them manage procurement processes more effectively while ensuring transparency, fairness and value for money.

Beyond technical skills, the programme encourages a culture of professionalism, integrity and ethical decision-making. It also provides an opportunity for participants from different institutions to exchange experiences and build stronger working relationships.

The training forms part of UNDP’s broader efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and support more effective, transparent and accountable management of development resources across Kazakhstan, contributing to stronger public institutions and sustainable development outcomes.
