Project

Strengthening National Decision Making towards Ratification of the Minamata Convention

Summary

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), assisted Georgia in preparing for the ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and other national stakeholders, the project laid the foundation for future implementation by establishing national decision-making mechanisms, assessing institutional and regulatory readiness, and developing a National Mercury Profile. Additional achievements included conducting a national mercury inventory (2016–2017) and implementing a public awareness campaign in 2017 to highlight the health and environmental risks associated with mercury exposure.
