What we do

Reducing humanitarian need, sustaining peace and driving development

Where we work

Moving from crisis to resilience, we work with governments and communities to rebuild clinics and schools, restart economies, and reinforce peace and justice

Where institutions are already under strain, economies fragile, and services out of reach, people are more vulnerable to shocks and slower to recover. That’s why development must be the starting point—not an afterthought.

Traditional models treat relief and development as separate phases, but waiting for crises to end before investing in recovery is a costly mistake. UNDP takes a different approach. We invest in development from day one—restoring infrastructure, supporting livelihoods, and strengthening essential services even in the most fragile contexts.

This approach is critical as aid budgets shrink and humanitarian needs grow. Every dollar spent on development shortens the humanitarian phase by helping people rebuild faster, reducing long-term dependency, and delivering better value for money. It’s not just the right thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do.

UNDP’s integrated model connects short-term relief to long-term recovery. We work with governments and communities to rebuild clinics and schools, restart economies, and reinforce justice and governance systems—helping people move from crisis to resilience.

What sets UNDP apart is our ability to work across sectors, timelines, and institutions. We don’t just deliver services—we empower countries to lead their own recovery by aligning public finance, leveraging local knowledge, and linking emergency response to national development plans.

In a riskier world, development is our strongest line of defence—protecting progress, reducing future need, and ensuring no one is left behind.

What we do is guided by 3 pillars of action:

  1. Moving Beyond Crisis (Early Recovery, Stabilization, Forced Displacement, Disaster Resilience)

Working with governments and partners on the frontlines of crisis, we know development can’t wait. Solutions must help communities respond, rebuild and recover. Responses must be aligned, holistic and long-term, empowering communities to move beyond crisis and build lasting resilience.

  2. Securing Our Future (Peacebuilding & Prevention, Rule of Law, Security & Human Rights, Local Action)

Investing in a thriving future means promoting peacebuilding and prevention, upholding the rule of law, security and human rights, and bolstering local governance. UNDP is committed to charting a path towards stability and prosperity for all.

  3. Innovating with Intent (Risk Anticipation, Unlocking Financing, AI & New Technology)

We need tools as fast as today’s disruptions — and that means faster, smarter, more inclusive crisis solutions and stronger strategic alliances. UNDP helps countries anticipate risks, unlock crisis finance, and use inclusive, human-centred technology and innovation for improved crisis responses.
