Warm classrooms for the new generation of primary school students in Petrovo

Primary school “Vuk Karadžić” has been retrofitted through the Low-Carbon project

December 31, 2023

Many students and employees of the Primary School "Vuk Karadžić" in the Municipality of Petrovo remembered their first school days by staying in cold rooms. The gymnasium, the library and the reading room were not in use during the winter, while students attended classes in jackets. Fortunately, better days are coming for the new generations.

Thanks to the UNDP BiH project "Increasing investment in public facilities with a low carbon emission rate in BiH" (Low-Carbon), which is supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF, the "Vuk Karadžić" school has been completely energy-renovated. Works and heating activities of this school, as part of the Low-Carbon project, were financed and carried out by the Fund for Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency of Republika Srpska .

As part of the project, the school's heating system was revitalized, thermal insulation of the facade walls of the entire school building, as well as the ceilings, was done. As the most important part of the project, the school emphasizes the renovation of the gymnasium, locker rooms and library, which are now at the service of the students even on winter days.

Text Box"It was very difficult to heat the sport hall, and teachers and students had to use it even during the winter period for physical and health education classes. They would warm up due to physical activity, but the temperature was low, which of course later affected their health," said school pedagogue Marina Tomić.

After heating the building and switching to pellet heating in school premises, it was possible to maintain an even temperature, which was not possible before. The temperature in the library, which has two exterior walls, was below optimal. Energy renovation will therefore ensure better working conditions for library workers, but also create a nicer and more pleasant climate for students who use the library for reading and various workshops.

"The complete facility is thermally and sound insulated. This will significantly affect the reduction of heat loss, which will be reflected in the reduction of energy consumption for heating. In the season of high temperatures, staying at school will also be much more pleasant. Sound insulation significantly reduces the deconcentration of students and workers due to external influences", said school director Igor Cvijanović

As the biggest advantage of the energy efficiency project, the school emphasizes the preservation of the health of employees and students who no longer have to work in cold rooms, which significantly affects the improvement of the quality of the teaching process.

The goal of the Low - Carbon project is to remove financial barriers to increase investment in public facilities, which contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions and creates savings, creates new "green" jobs, and provides support for the country's economic development.
