Tuzla will get a new music school building and a gathering place for new generations

August 30, 2022

As part of the "Country Infrastructure Development Initative in Bosnia and Herzegovina (CIDI)" project implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Tuzla Canton, the Ministry of Spatial Planning and Environmental Protection of the Tuzla Canton and the City of Tuzla, a building construction project was developed music schools that will gather new generations of talented young people from this region. Music will finally find its permanent home in a city with over 70 years of tradition and work of music education institutions.

History places the beginning of the story in the time of reconstruction after the end of the Second World War. After the establishment of the Primary Music School in 1949, the Secondary Music School was already established in 1957. Due to the merits for the opening of the secondary school, the institution bears the name of Čestimir Dušek, a Tuzla native of Czech origin, conductor and pedagogue who is remembered by many generations of Tuzla men and women.

The sinking and dilapidation of the ground will make the high school and primary music school leave their original location and find temporary accommodation in the building of Primary School "Centar" at Mirza Delibašića Street 14. After a long wait and uncertainty, the permanent home for the education of new generations of musical talents in Tuzla is becoming a reality. The first phase of the project has been completed, and construction is expected to continue in October. Rough construction and basic installation works were carried out, which enabled the building to be properly closed and protected from external influences until conditions are created for the execution of the remaining works, which will complete the future building of the music school and put it into operation. About 2.7 million convertible marks are earmarked for this project.

"I wish for the day when students will be able to develop their magnificent talent in the modern and more conditional school facility of the Music School. I want to thank all those who contributed in any way to the construction of the school. The modern facility of the Music School opens perspectives for the further development of music education and culture in Tuzla and its surroundings," said the Minister of Education and Science of the Tuzla Canton, dr.sci. Ahmed Omerovic.

With the continuation of the works in the next school year, those involved in the project express the hope that most of the works will be finalized by next September. At the end of 2021/2022, a total of 354 students attended the elementary music school, in ten departments: piano, accordion, guitar, violin, cello, clarinet, flute, saxophone, solo singing and ballet.

"With the new building of the Music School, the conditions will be created for the expansion of the primary music school department and the increase in the number of students, and we will also contribute to higher quality collective training of teachers, the implementation of workshops with students and parents, as well as the implementation of projects of importance for the school", explains Nedim Suljic, the director of Elementary music school.

The Tuzla Canton and the City of Tuzla will get the music school they deserve and a place to which Tuzla's talent will return and gather around.

"By building a new school and creating new preconditions for work, we will provide many innovations in our work and functioning, which includes the opening of new departments, modernization of teaching in accordance with the current times, creation of our own audio and video production and many other activities," concludes the director of Music School Dejan Milkunić.
