Switzerland and UNDP Join Forces to Advance Circular Economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina
November 7, 2025
The Government of Switzerland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a financial agreement to strengthen cooperation in advancing the circular economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as part of the Catalyzing the Green Transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina Portfolio (GTP).
The partnership will advance the country’s shift toward a resource-efficient, low-carbon, and inclusive economy by promoting circular economy frameworks and innovations that reduce waste and environmental impact. The circular economy component complements ongoing efforts under the Green Transition Portfolio, which promotes cleaner air, sustainable energy, and green jobs across the country.
The agreement was signed by Ms. Georgette Bruchez, Chargée d’Affaires a.i. of Switzerland to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Mr. Renaud Meyer, Resident Representative of UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the United Nations House in Sarajevo.
Ms. Georgette Bruchez, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of International Cooperation, Embassy of Switzerland in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said:
“Switzerland is proud to support Bosnia and Herzegovina’s transition towards an environmentally sustainable and inclusive economy, in line with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans. Circular economy is key to supporting resource efficiency and fostering innovation. It also creates sustainable economic opportunities and supports Bosnia and Herzegovina’s alignment with European environmental and economic standards.”

Renaud Meyer, UNDP Resident Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasized:
“Circular economy is at the heart of the green transition - it transforms how we produce, consume, and value resources. This partnership with Switzerland reflects our shared commitment to supporting a cleaner, more resilient, and inclusive future for Bosnia and Herzegovina. By scaling up circular practices, we can help businesses become more competitive, create new green jobs, foster behavior change among citizens and improve the quality of life for people and communities.”
The circular economy initiative under the Green Transition Portfolio will focus on strengthening the enabling environment for sustainable growth by providing policy support, capacity development, and targeted assistance to governments across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Catalyzing the Green Transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina Portfolio (GTP) is a joint initiative of the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led by UNDP, and co-chaired by the UN Resident Coordinator and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH (MOFTER), with the support and strategic partnership of Sweden and Switzerland. It brings together UN agencies - including FAO, ILO, UNECE, UNEP, UNODC, and UN Women - along with national institutions and authorities at all levels, to drive the country’s green, inclusive, and sustainable transition across four key areas: decarbonisation, depollution, biodiversity and nature, and circular economy.
