Industry4.0

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a step closer to sustainable and digital industrial transformation thanks to a new initiative launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in partnership with the Foreign Trade Chamber of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The initiative aims to support domestic companies in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies and international sustainability standards, helping them become more competitive, resilient, and prepared for the challenges of the global economy. Industry 4.0 encompasses digitalization and advanced technologies such as automation, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and data analytics - already transforming the way industries operate worldwide. UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina provides technical guidance and support to the Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH on its path to becoming the institutional hub for the UN Global Compact initiative and the principles of sustainable and socially responsible business.

As part of this joint initiative, the Foreign Trade Chamber will carry out a survey and assessment of companies’ readiness for industrial transformation and sustainability. At the same time, entity-level chambers of commerce will deliver training programmes and provide technical assistance to companies striving to become leaders in this process.

These activities will help companies improve business processes, increase productivity, strengthen energy and resource efficiency, and ensure compliance with international market requirements and principles of sustainable development. In doing so, the initiative not only enhances competitiveness, but also creates new business opportunities, investments, and jobs.

A particular focus is placed on engaging women entrepreneurs and leaders of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across BiH—promoting gender equality and empowering women as key actors in economic transformation.

This initiative is part of UNDP’s broader Catalysing the Green Transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina Portfolio, and is linked to the SDG Business Pioneers Programme, which raises private sector awareness on the importance of sustainable business practices. It further reinforces the role of the private sector in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while bringing the country closer to European and global practices.
