30 January 2026, Plymouth, Montserrat - Thirty-two senior government officials recently participated in a Data to Policy Training Workshop organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), from 26 – 29 January 2026. The in-person training forms part of UNDP’s comprehensive digital capacity-building support to the Government of Montserrat through its Multi-Country Office for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Participants represented a broad range of ministries and institutions, including agriculture, lands, housing, youth affairs, education, health, social services, treasury, customs, airport management, the legislature, and the judiciary.

Designed to strengthen the ability of senior officials to generate, interpret, and apply data in public sector decision making, the workshop covered:
•    Principles of data-informed policymaking
•    Data sources, accessibility, and partnerships
•    Data ethics and governance
•    Data analysis and visualization
•    Using data for Artificial Intelligence
•    AI for public policy
•    Turning data into policy, monitoring, and evaluation

At the conclusion of the training, participants were better equipped to use real time, reliable data to guide policy formulation, programme design, and public decision making. Strengthening digital governance, data literacy, and responsible AI adoption will be critical as Montserrat builds on the findings of the Digital Readiness Assessment and AI Landscape Assessment conducted with UNDP, as it seeks to modernize its public sector.

It is expected that this will support more inclusive, people-centred, and evidence-based public policies, advancing Montserrat’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
